”We are thrilled that this program not only expands the BPO’s arts education impact in Western New York, but that it also uses music to explore many of the STEM skills that create a core curriculum,” said Donald Ogilvie, BPO Vice-Chair and Education Committee Chair. “Through this collaboration, we are presenting art, science and technology - hand in hand.”
Terence Rafferty, Regional Vice President of Operations Time Warner Cable WNY, added, “The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra is a gem in the Western New York community, and we’re thrilled to partner with them and bring the Science of Sound to thousands of local students. Time Warner Cable’s 'Connect a Million Minds' program creates a powerful link between the strength of our company and the needs of students throughout Western New York.”
The Science of Sound program presented by BPO Associate Conductor, Matthew Kraemer answers questions such as, “What is the science behind the sounds we hear?” and “How do composers use this science to create beautiful music?” The orchestra demonstrated how frequency and timbre work in each instrumental section.
Professor David Abbott from the Buffalo State College Physics Department provided images of sound waves produced from different instruments and illuminating graphs representing scientific concepts of sound. Music from some of the greatest “manipulators of sound” such as Wagner, Beethoven, Dvorak and Stravinsky help to demonstrate how physics are an integral part of the music that we enjoy.
