The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, in partnership with Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds, performed a live broadcast of the Science of Sound Education Concert, conducted by Matthew Kraemer, over a live web stream that reached over 10,000 students across Western New York on Wednesday, April 27 at 10:15 a.m. from Kleinhans Music Hall.
As a part of the BPO 75th Anniversary Celebration, this unique partnership, generously made possible by Time Warner Cable’s production and services, is the first of its kind across the country and involves 54 schools from 23 districts across Western New York. 1,000 students from Jamestown, Ellicottville, Frontier, Lakeshore and Bradford, PA, along with several charter schools, attended the concert at Kleinhans Music Hall. In addition, the following districts received this broadcast over a live web stream:

The Science of Sound program presented by BPO Associate Conductor, Matthew Kraemer answers questions such as, “What is the science behind the sounds we hear?” and “How do composers use this science to create beautiful music?” The orchestra demonstrated how frequency and timbre work in each instrumental section.
Professor David Abbott from the Buffalo State College Physics Department provided images of sound waves produced from different instruments and illuminating graphs representing scientific concepts of sound. Music from some of the greatest “manipulators of sound” such as Wagner, Beethoven, Dvorak and Stravinsky help to demonstrate how physics are an integral part of the music that we enjoy.
