As a young girl I started to watch the classic 1950's sitcom I Love Lucy with my Mom. Today I Love Lucy is still my favorite TV show. The physical comedy and characters have stood the test of time. Lucille Ball the star of I Love Lucy was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, NY. When I found out that there was a museum in Jamestown honoring her I knew I had to visit. My sister and I travel to Jamestown every year to attend the Lucy Festivals that are held at the museum. This year when I was researching information for the 2011 festival, I found something about a Lucille Ball Hometown Wedding Contest. This immediately got my attention since I was engaged. The winning couple will win a1950's themed wedding and honeymoon. The ceremony will take place in the Tropicana Room at the Lucy Desi Center.
This wedding would be a dream come true for any I Love Lucy fan. I knew that we had to enter this contest. There was a 15 page application that had to be completed and we needed to make one minute video. I immediately filled out the application and began to think of ideas for the video. The video was definitely our stumbling block. Things got really busy at work and time began to run out. The deadline was approaching quickly. We never ended up making the video. I was sad that we had let the dream wedding slip away.December 15th is the anniversary of my first date with my fiance. That morning he told me he had a surprise for me. He had made a video and entered the contest for us. I was totally shocked. The very next morning I was surprised to get a phone call at work letting me know that we were 1 of 5 finalists! The winning couple is chosen through an online vote which started on December 20th. Voting ends of February 11th and the winner will be announced on Valentine's Day. The wedding will take place on July 30, 2011 and will kick off the celebration of Lucille Ball's 100th Birthday.
Since the finalists were announced all the couples have been doing radio, newspaper, and TV interviews. The support we have received from our family, friends and local communities has been amazing. The best part of this contest is all the attention it is bringing to Lucille Ball and the I Love Lucy show.
The I Love Lucy show premiered 33 years before I was born yet it has had tremendous impact on my life. My sincere hope is that I Love Lucy will continue to touch young people's lives and that Lucy's legacy of laughter will be enjoyed by people for years to come!
