To the great plains tribes of Native American Indians of the old west,the buffalo had important symbolism.Not only did the buffalo provide meat,clothes,tools etc.,but also symbolized the universe.They believed a child whose name included the word "buffalo" would grow & mature quickly,have great strength & become an extraordinary hunter.They also believed that when a white buffalo was born their goddess had look favorably upon them.There would be a time of plenty & good fortune.Fun facts:There are 3 species of buffalo (a.k.a. bison)in North America,although some might classify them as races.They are the largest,most powerful land animals in North America.Even a grizzly bear would think twice about taking on a healthy adult bison!It is said it was not uncommon for a buffalo to out run a Native American Indian or European on horseback when chased or hunted.
