My Hanukkah Present

A friend gave me this beautiful, handmade plaque with a red frame, the words of the Shema (Hear O Israel) in English on each of the four sides, and a picture of a seven-candle menorah.

This was her Hanukkah present to me and a lovely and meaningful holiday decoration and light in my apartment.

(A seven-branched candelabrum used in the ancient Tabernacle in the desert and Temple in Jerusalem, a symbol of Judaism since ancient times and the emblem of the modern state of Israel. )

You're right. It does stir deep feelings and turn one's thoughts to Yerushalayim, the beit haMikdash, and the struggle to keep the light of the faith lit through those words and true understanding of the word echad.

And it definitely recalls the beit HaMikdash, a longing for its rebuilding, and the struggle to keep the faith alive by always remembering the meaning of the word echad.
