Niagara County Community College will host its annual Veterans Day Ceremony on Wednesday, Nov 10th, 11 am at the NCCC’s Veterans Park (located new Route 31 entrance).The annual ceremony will be led by Sgt Derek Hornung, currently serving in the US Army Reserves having completed a tour in Iraq. Sgt Hornung is a graduate of NCCC’s Criminal Justice Department and is currently working on a second degree in Emergency Management.
The Keynote speaker for this year's ceremony is Petty Officer Vince Scherber. Petty Officer Scherber served in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1969-1973 and graduated from NCCC in 1980. After 30 years of dedicated service working at the Veterans Administration in Buffalo, he is now retired. Sgt Philip Stern, a freshman in NCCC's Wine & Beverage Management Program will be the featured student speaker. Sgt Stern is currently a member of the USAR and has also served a tour in Iraq. Sgt Stern will speak on behalf of all student veterans.
The program features a color guard and the National Anthem sung by NCCC fine arts student Brianna Pressley, a sophomore in the NCCC Music program. NCCC President James P. Klyczek will speak as well as President of the Student Senate, Brandon May.
The ceremony will conclude with NCCC's tradition of placing a wreath on the Veterans Park monument and TAPS. The wreath will be placed by Brian Held, a veteran of the US Marine Corps and Tom Rutkowski, veteran of the US Air Force. Both Bryan and Tom work in NCCC's Maintenance Department. Taps will be played by Jerel Wilson, a Music major at NCCC.
The ceremony is open to the public and the NCCC faculty is encouraged to bring classes to the ceremony to show support of our nations' veterans. Refreshments will be served immediately after the ceremony in the Notar Administration Building lobby.
In observance of Veterans Day, NCCC will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 11.
