July's Women in Leadership honoree knows what it's like to be told she can't do something, but she didn't let it stop her from starting her own business.

Channel 7 teamed up with the National Association of Women Business Owners Buffalo Niagara on this report.

Laurie Albertsson never imagined the success she now enjoys in her career. The Vice-President of Fernwood Capital and Leasing in North Tonawanda just got by in high school and didn't much care for college, but something clicked when she started working as a secretary for a leasing company 23 years ago, so she asked to be promoted to salesperson.

At first, her boss said no.

"When I got turned down in regards to that position, it really made me more determined, " said Albertsson.

Two years later, she got the job and grossed more than a million dollars in sales in the first year. She was hoping to take over the company, but when it sold out to someone else, she teamed up with her husband Jon and they branched out on their own.

Fernwood now helps almost 300 companies locally and across the US and Canada finance capital improvements. The company has five employees and has booked almost 5-million dollars in sales, but is still small enough to provide that personal touch.
