WEST SENECA (WKBW) A USA Volleyball sign is taped up in front of the Vanegas home in West Seneca, as final preps are completed both inside and out to cheer on Matt Anderson, a family member and olympian.

"It's unreal, but it's something that he's worked really hard for and I'm so happy he's gotten there. And I can't wait to go see him," Matt's mother Nancy said.

Anderson was born and raised in West Seneca, playing volleyball for West Seneca West, winning a national championship at Penn State before joining the men's national team. Now he is in London awaiting the start of the Olympics, and his family couldn't be more proud.

"Just pure excitement. It's unreal actually. We saw him win the championship in college, we went over to Italy to see him play for his club team over there, and every day we watch him on TV or in person, he just seems to get better and better and better," Matt's sister Joelle Vanegas said.

The youngest of five, Anderson's mom says her son was athletic as a child, but was actually cut from his high school basketball team.

"They didn't think he was going to be tall enough. Surprise!" Anderson said.

Now Matt begins a quest for gold, representing his family, his country, and Western New York.

"I think it's so cool. To see on our high school board it says 'Go get the gold Matt Anderson,'" Vanegas said.

With the opening ceremonies and the opening game for Team USA next week, Matt's family will be watching, including his niece and nephew Tristin and Juliana Vanegas, who cheered "Go Uncle Matt" in front of their front lawn American flag.
