BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - A Tokyo-based solar panel manufacturer signed a memorandum of understanding to explore building a plant in Buffalo.

The joint venture between Solar Frontier and the SUNY College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering will create 250 jobs in research, development and manufacturing.

As many as 700-1,000 indirect jobs could also be created by suppliers and contractors, state officials said.

One possible site for the new manufacturing plant could be RiverBend, the state's development on the former Republic Steel site on South Park Ave. in Buffalo.

Solar Frontier plans to invest $700 million. The state does not have a figure on its investment amount which will likely come from the remainder of the Buffalo Billion, the state's economic development fund for Western New York.
