AMHERST, N.Y. (WKBW) - A retired Amherst Police detective died in a Florida fire after a standoff with police.

Police say 74-year-old Arthur Hohensee took his family hostage inside their home in Gateway, Florida.

He then got into a shootout with police before he set the house on fire.

"I watched him go to his trunk about three times and reload his shotgun," said Florida firefighter Craig Farmer. "He just shot everything that he could shoot."

The wife and daughter managed to escape from a bedroom window.
