Niagara Falls, N.Y. (WKBW) - It was a day of sadness but overwhelming pride for the Gollnitz family as their son Sgt. Jonathan Gollnitz is remembered.

"This is a very difficult time for them it hasn't set in," Sgt. First Class Jason Roberts said.

Fredonia native Sgt. Gollnitz died in Afghanistan in September fighting as a member of the U.S. Army. Now, a room called the Military Entrance Processing Station or MEPS at the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station has been named after the fallen hero.

"We want to be able to memorialize those who came before them so those who are signing up to serve can remember those who have fallen," Sgt. Roberts said.

Sgt. Gollnitz name was added to a dedication wall of men and woman who died in battle, all from Western New York.

"We do it for Veterans Day so it's important to remember those who have served, especially those who have fallen," Sgt. Roberts said.

Sgt. Gollnitz was previously part of the Navy, now the Army and is being memorialized at the air force base. His comrades said they are in the fight together no matter what branch of the military they are serving.

"It's a brotherhood. We all serve in our own special way and support each other," Sgt. Roberts said.

Military officials said although Veterans Day is a special day of remembrance, these fallen heroes should be thought of throughout the year.
