ALLEGANY, NY (WKBW) - The mass shooting at Fort Hood was just another news story on television for the residents of Allegany, that is until they learned that native Patrick Miller was one of the victims.

"It really hits close to home -- when it's one of your own," said Jeff Chouinard, a lifelong friend.

Miller, who graduated from Allegany-Limestone High School before attending nearby St. Bonaventure University, registered with the Army when he started college.

"I believe that his motto is country, family, friends. I mean, that's just the way the kid is. He's always been like that," said Chouinard, who organized a prayer vigil at Allegany Baptist Church on Thursday.

The service was attended mostly by friends.

Miller, 32, is expected to fully recover from a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. He underwent a second surgery on Thursday and remains hospitalized in intensive care.

His wife Ashley is at his side.
