BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Just 9 days before a scheduled half-marathon was set to take runners through Orchard Park, the race organizers postponed the event with no explanation, and no refund of the registration fee.
Many runners paid nearly $100 to register.
However with little time to spare, a group of local organizers and sponsors have come together to save the race.
Dan Horan, President of Eclipse Multi-Sport, was on vacation near Boston, Massachusetts when he got the news. After a discussion with his wife and some sponsors, Horan decided he would take over the event, and hopped a plane back to Western New York make it happen.
"It's going to have a different name. I've already got the U.S.A. Track and Field sanctioning, they expedited it. We're looking at a certification from a group...so things are on its way and it's going to be a great race," said Horan.
Horan has worked with the Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Buffalo Bills and area sponsors to put the new race on, and it will be of no cost to runners who were already registered for the original race.
Those registered for the Rapid Running event just need to register at 50yardfinish.com, and show proof they were previously registered.
New runners can also still sign up for about half of the original cost.
The "50 Yard Finish", as its name suggests, will still finish at the 50-yard line inside Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Participants can take part in either the half marathon, a 5k run or the 1-mile kids run.
Organizers are still looking for volunteers to help with the race. Anyone interested can find out how to sign-up by going to www.eclipsemultisport.com.
The race takes place on Saturday, June 30 at 7:00 a.m.
