BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - The Human Rights Campaign, a leading supporter of same-sex marriage has started an internet craze: changing your profile picture to the red version of the HRC symbol. Hundreds of thousands of people have joined in on the craze, but now the visual push for marriage equality is getting political and also creative.
13 members of Congress have even gone red in the fight for marriage equality, including Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, Senator Elizabeth Warren from Massachusetts, and Representative Dan Kildee of Michigan.
A new trend has also started, using unconventional items to symbolize the same logo, including wedding bands, light sabres, batman logos, and even simple pictures of red velvet cake.
Fans on our Facebook page sounded off on what they think of the craze.
Raymond, who changed his picture to the red logo says "I wish to see more of them!"
Dan, however, said "Sorry. A logo doesn't impress me. Actions do."
Elizabeth said "Social media can have profound effects on how
people think about issues. Nothing wrong with it."
The HRC is also taking it one step further by selling accessories on their website with the red logo.
And don't forget, this all started on Facebook, showing how trend-setting social media can be. Changing your photo and making it unique may not solve the issue, but does allow you to show your support.
