BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - Niagara Falls resident Anna Macoretta has lived on 59th Street for 44 years.

She has never seen a rat in her neighborhood until this summer. But now her backyard is infested with them.

"The small ones were about eight inches," she said, describing the rodents. A neighbor has seen bigger ones. "He had his hands out unbelievable. God I've never seen one that big."

Neighbors believe the rats are coming from Buffalo Ave., which is currently under reconstruction.

Residents met with city, county and state leaders Thursday night, looking for help.

"One of the things we're looking at is what would be the cost to standardize all the garbage containers in the city," said Mayor Paul Dyster.

But that solution is months or years away. Until then, residents say they feel helpless.
