BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) Congressman Brian Higgins and New York State Senator Tim Kennedy joined with officials from the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation to officially open the East Canal Project to the public.

The $5 million dollar project, that was funded with money from the New York Power Authority Industrial Incentive Agreement, features a granite plaza, shallow pool of water, fountains, and a shaded tree grove.

Located between Main and Washington streets, the outdoor space is located in the center of Buffalo's inner harbor development.

Currently, the pool and fountain areas contain no water, but rather, a 30-foot tall holiday tree.

Starting this year, the Canalside Holiday Celebration is being moved to the East Canal at One Canalside.

A holiday tree lighting will take place Friday evening at 6pm with free family events scheduled for both Friday and Saturday.
