Renovation work is underway at the former Zillycakes site on Elmwood Avenue. It will soon be home to Firefly Cupcakes' second location.

When Firefly owner Wendy Egloff heard that Zillycakes was closing, she made a deal to purchase the company's equipment and take over the Elmwood Avenue lease. Then the two business owners hit it off and worked out a deal.

Zillycakes founder, Zilly Rosen, will have space within the new site to work on cake designs. "This allows me to shrink my footprint," Rosen said. "I'm a designer, a teacher and an occasional producer of bigger projects."

Meanwhile, the deal allows Egloff to expand her growing business and fulfill customer requests for a second Firefly location. "There's been a lot of people, since we opened, inquiring about opening a second, third or fourth store," she said.

While Rosen wanted to slowdown the pace of business ownership, Egloff doesn't mind dealing with running a business and managing employees. "I spent most of my adult life working for other people and I want to be in charge of my own destiny," she said. "This is a good way to accomplish that."

Will customers adapt to the changes at the popular site? Stay Tuned. While the ownership of the Elmwood Avenue site is changing and the building is getting a facelift, there are some things that won't change. "It's really a warm and friendly space with smiling people and great customer service," Rosen said. "That's not going to change."

The new Firefly cupcakes is set to open at 1008 Elmwood Ave. this spring.
