BUFFALO, NY (WKBW ) - Thanks to a foundation based a thousand miles away, Joseph Swarthout received his new wheelchair. A $21,000 state-of-the-art machine, at no cost to him.

Joe has cerebral palsy and when medicaid denied his claim for a power chair, Joe and his family didn't know if he'd ever be independent again.

That's when the Darrell Gwynn Foundation in Florida stepped in.

"It'll give him a lot of independence, and that's really the goal of the foundation, to give people power chairs, to have them be fully independent, and allow them to get from point A to point B without having to depend on their staff or their caregivers," said Angel Pardo.

Joe's new wheelchair has a few unique features, including a Superman theme to go with his nickname, "Super Joe."
