No complaining about cold, winter weather at one local business... the owners of Gear for Adventure are actually saying, "Let it snow!"

Kevin Beckwith considers it part of the job to encourage Western New Yorkers to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. "We tell people all time, you can sit inside and complain about weather or find something to do 'in' the weather," he said.

One winter sports that's growing in popularity is snowshoeing. Gear for Adventure sells and rents snowshoes and Beckwith leads guided tours for the public on Thursdays.

He and his wife Sarah opened Gear for Adventure as an online business back in 2004, after being inspired on a trip to Algonquin Park in Canada.

Gear for Adventure has since added a retail site, at 1 Buffalo Street, in Hamburg. It is filled with all the gear you need for an outdoor adventure, no matter the season. Items range from locally made camping knives and survival bracelets to the snowshoes, cross country ski equipment and more.

This year, the extreme cold weather is actually heating up sales. "That affects sales in a positive way," Beckwith said. "People need hats and gloves, especially after two years that we've had. Everybody was buying lighter coats the last two years and now they need heavier coats this year."

Another factor driving business this winter - the Olympic Games, which are inspiring more people to try winter sports. "Especially in the cross country area," he said. "We rent cross country skis. We've seen a bit of an uptick in that since the Olympics started."

Now the Beckwiths are hoping to bring home the gold as they continue to inspire local customers to take advantage of Western New York's four seasons.

When the weather does warm up, Gear for Adventure focuses on hiking, backpacking camping, canoeing and more.
