BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - One year ago Tuesday, firefighters Jonathan Croom and Lieutenant Charles McCarthy lost their lives fighting a blaze at a convenient store on Buffalo's east side.

Croom's fiance, Ingrid Perugachi gave birth to his second child just two weeks after the tragedy. Ingrid named the baby boy after his fallen father.

Ingrid shares her memories of her fiance as a family man and a person who loved his children, family and his job as a firefighter. She says he always went the extra mile to help someone in need.

"It didn't matter, he didn't have to be working to help people," said Perugachi.

Croom's mother, Angie Heusinger has placed a number of memorial billboards up around the city, seven in total, in honor of Jonathan, reminding people that two brave men lost their lives that day.

Eyewitness News will be covering the anniversary of the tragedy that claimed the lives of two brave firefighters throughout the day, both on air and on WKBW.com.
