BUFFALO, NY (WKBW)- 26-year-old Matthew Ruckdaschel of Getzville will now spend the next 3 1/2 to 10 1/2 years in jail after he admitted to being drunk behind the wheel when he drove the wrong way on the Kensington Expressway in January of 2011and killed two people. Ruckdaschel struck another car head-on near Best Street, killing 37-year-old Orlando Anderson and his passenger Thomas Johnson of Ohio. Anderson was a father of 3 and Johnson was a father of 5.
During Monday's sentencing, the family members of the victims became distraught when Erie County Court Judge Michael Pietruszka handed down his ruling. Many family members left the courtroom upset. The families had urged the judge to hand down the maximum sentence of 25 years behind bars. In April, Ruckdaschel pled guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide. Prosecutors say he was impaired by drugs and alcohol prior to the crash.
Ruckdashel, who is now wheelchair bound from the accident, apologized to the families in court. The 26-year-old said it was a worst decision of his life to drive drunk and his actions tear at his soul everyday.
