CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WKBW) Mitochondrial disease is a condition where the body stops converting food into energy.
The disease is often fatal because it causes major organs to stop functioning.
Sixteen years ago, little was known about the disease, but researchers have been able to determine that a genetic mutation is responsible.
Researchers have also found that the disease is at the core of other diseases like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and some cancers.
Currently, there are treatments for Mitochondrial Disease but no cures.
The 4th Annual "Energy Walk for Life" hopes to raise funds to help research efforts.
It is scheduled for Saturday in Cheektowaga Town Park with registration starting at 12:30pm.
