West Seneca, NY (WKBW) A neighborhood is in mourning after a mother and her son lost their lives in a tragic Friday fire morning on Covington Drive in West Seneca.

The investigation continues there to determine the cause after a massive swift moving fire engulfed the home Friday morning

The West Seneca police Department detailed the incident in a release obtained by Eyewitness News:

At 7:49a.m. Friday, our agency received a 911 call of a house fire at 254 Covington Dr., West Seneca. Initial reports indicated that there were people trapped inside.

Numerous Town of West Seneca Police units arrived on scene within minutes, and reported that the residence was fully engulfed in flames.

Witnesses on scene reported that two adolescents had already escaped from the residence through second floor windows, with the assistance of a neighbor, but there were still two people trapped inside on the second floor.

Officers attempted to make entry from several locations around the house, but the fire was so intense, they were repelled by the smoke and intensive heat of the fire.

Fire units from Seneca Hose Fire Company arrived on scene shortly after the patrols and made entry into the residence. Firefighters located an adult, female victim lying on the floor, just inside the residence front doorway and removed her from the house.

Firefighters continued to search for a second victim and as they battled the intense fire, they were able to make their way up to the second level where they discovered an unconscious male child in an upstairs bedroom, and removed him from the house.

Both victims were determined to be deceased at the scene. The residences on either side of 254 Covington Dr. received exterior damage due to the intensity of the fire.

The two individuals who escaped the fire were taken to ECMC by Rural Metro Ambulance. Additionally, two (un-named) firemen from Seneca Hose Fire Company received minor burns during the search for the victims and were also transported to ECMC. All four were expected to be released Friday.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by members of the West Seneca Police Fire Investigation squad and fire investigators from the Erie County Sheriff’s Department.

All four victims in this case are related and lived at the residence. They are as follows:

Nancy Crance, dob: 9/10/1960 – mother – deceased
