BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - This year the post office says it will handle five times number of letters and cards and double the number of packages compared to a normal Monday.

1.5-million cards and letters will processed here in Buffalo at the Niagara Square post office, where they report a steady stream of customers.

At the main post office on William Street they had a line of people that stretched to the door.

This year, the post office is seeing fewer people mailing christmas cards.

Each year that drops off about 5%. The postal service thinks it becasue more people are using social media to send holiday greetings.

But package mailings are way up about 20% because on-line shopping continues to become very popular.

Regardless, whether you are sending a card or a gift if you want it there by christmas, the deadline is fast approaching.

Now this year Santa has three helpers working at the post office, and the postal elves will make sure that 1,000 letters written by local kids will get to the north pole on time.

But the elves tell us sometimes kids try to bribe Santa by putting cookies and gifts in with their letters.

On last piece of advice, if you are sending a gift card inside a card, make sure you put a return address on the gift card.

Because sometimes they fall out while they are being processed.
