BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW)- Not since the early 1980's have cars driven on Main Street Downtown. However, another step has been taken to bring them back.

The total cost to return two-way traffic to the area is $21 million dollars, a small price, officials, say compared to the long-term economic benefits.

This project on the 500 block is part of the bigger "Cars Sharing Main Street" project. The idea is to stimulate business in the heart of Downtown which saw vehicular traffic disappear almost 30 years ago.

The street-scaping project on the 700 block is already complete and construction on the 600 block is about 60 percent done with cars back on the road by spring. Vehicles are expected back on the 500 block sometime next year.

The total cost of the project so far...a little over 30 million dollars, paid for by federal grants.
