Brocton, NY (WKBW) - Tragedy struck in the Southern Tier, when a young 16-year-old football player died Monday evening.
Damon Janes of Brocton suffered critical injuries after a helmet-to-helmet collision Friday night on the turf.
The Brocton Central School has cancelled or postponed all sporting events through Friday. Homecoming activities have been postponed as well.
Janes had been battling critical injuries through the weekend, after a helmet-to-helmet collision during a game Friday at Portville Central School.
The teen was carried off the field on a stretcher. Originally, he was taken to Olean General Hospital, before being transported to Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo.
Even before Janes died, grief counselors were on hand in the Portville, Westfield and Brocton School Districts.
Students and community members have been sharing their grief on social media. On twitter, the hashtag #PrayForDamon became a symbol of support for the teen and his family.
More than 1,500 people have "liked" a page advertising a Damon Janes Memorial Benefit. According to the page, the benefit will take place Sunday, September 29th from Noon until 8 p.m. At Nickle Plate Depot in Brocton.
