BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - It's nearly time to kick off the new year in style with one of the biggest celebrations in all of Western New York! Organizers of the Buffalo Ball Drop & Fireworks Display say this year the light fixture that drops from the Electric Tower will be new and improved.

"What we did was upgrade the lights that were inside the ball," said Developer Paul Iskalo. "It's now translucent. Before it had white lighting inside, actually 4,800 watts of white light power. We've now upgraded that to 480 watts of LED so it'll be brighter and multi colored. That'll allow us to change the color of the ball as it's coming down the tower."

Friday crews tested the new lights and performed a test drop to make sure it's perfect for New Year's Eve. The event will take place outside the Electric Tower and throughout Roosevelt Plaza on December 31st.

The Buffalo Ball Drop will coincide with the ball drop in New York City, followed by a fireworks display. Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown says extra security will be on hand and police will utilize the newly implemented 'Skywatch Unit'.

"We previewed it a few weeks ago and it's similar to the one used in New York City in Times Square for their ball drop," said Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.

"So we will have a good compliment to the police officers that will be there. It'll be a safe and wonderful event in Downtown Buffalo."
