BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) The Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament has been coming to Buffalo for over 20 years.

But this year, the event that draws hundreds of people into downtown Buffalo every June might not take place because the host sponsor is still deciding if it can afford it.

The Buffalo Police Athletic League (PAL) has sponsored the Gus Macker Tournament for several years.

In March, the PAL board of directors will vote to see if it will once again bring the tournament to Buffalo for 2014.

While the Gus Macker Tournament is a family event, it is also a fundraiser.

The Buffalo Police Athletic League pays for all the up-front costs with hopes that the proceeds will be enough to net a profit for the community organization.

The proceeds help fund PAL's year-round activities for youth in Buffalo.

Executive Director Modie Cox says that before the organization agrees to sponsor Gus Macker 2014, PAL wants to make sure it turns a profit on the tournament and not end up taking a loss.

The delay in a decision has forced the Gus Macker organization to release its 2014 schedule without a Buffalo date.

Gus Macker Tournament owner Scott McNeal tells Eyewitness News he expected a decision by now so planning for the June event could get underway.

While there is still time for Buffalo to be added to the 2014 schedule, McNeal says time is running out.

"I'm trying to figure out how we can make it the best for the PAL group to keep doing it."

City of Buffalo officials says talks are ongoing to save the tournament. but it is unlikely that the City of Buffalo will be able to take on the total cost to run it - in addition to the support services that they already provide to the tournament.
