BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - A 21-year-old father is behind bars, his infant son hospitalized after police said the baby was shaken by the man.

Alex Mercado is facing charges of reckless assault and second-degree assault.

The boy's mother reported the alleged incident to law enforcement. It is not clear if she was home at the time.

Police responded to 293 Amherst St. in Buffalo on Monday night just after 8 p.m.

The boy, who is three-months-old, is suffering blindness, bleeding on the brain and bruised ribs.

Mercado pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on Tuesday. He is scheduled to be back in Buffalo City Court on Thursday morning for a felony hearing.
