Batavia Police and school officials are investigating the event surrounding a fight captured on cell phone video.

"Facebook is a blessing and a curse," said Christopher Dailey, Deputy Superintendent of Batavia City Schools.

The 26 second cell phone video of two female students at Batavia Middle School fighting on the school's front steps just as classes were dismissed Thursday afternoon found its way onto a Facebook page titled "Batavia Fights."

It's not exactly how Dailey uses Facebook.

"When I was doing our reunion for my highschool it was wonderful but also when not used correctly it can be hard for kids to handle," said Dailey.

The identities of the kids are not being released but you can clearly hear the crowd chanting and laughing as the girls punch, kick, pull each others hair and roll on the ground.

A faculty member sees what is happening and pulls the girls apart.

"The students had some bumps and bruises obviously from rolling around fighting," stated Dailey.

Authorities won't say who posted the video online, but with the help of parents, police and representatives from Facebook the page was taken down around 11a.m. Friday. It had been up for less than 24 hours.

The school district recently adopted a new bullying prevention program but admits it has its work cut out since social media is so popular and even harder to contain.

"Any kind of website like that or Facebook page, Youtube kind of thing, really limits our ability to try and limit these kind of behaviors," explained Dailey.

Because this case involves minors not much information can be released about any disciplinary action taken against those involved. Dailey would only say they girls were quote, "academically taken care of."

The police investigation is ongoing.
