CHEEKTOWAGA, NY (WKBW) - Police say an 8-year-old boy is responsible for crashing his mother's car near his Cheektowaga home early Monday morning. Police say the 8-year-old had taken his mother's keys sometime before 6'oclock Monday morning, left his Willowlawn Parkway home in Cheektowaga and took the car for spin down Dingens Street. Police are unsure how long the boy was driving the vehicle, but investigators say other drivers spotted the child as far down as Bailey Avenue.

"The mother woke up like she normally does at 6 o'clock and she discovered the child was missing along with the car. She panicked and called 911 right away," said Cheektowaga Police Captain James Speyer.

Unknown to the frantic mother, police were already responding to a car accident just steps away from her home. Police say the 8-year-old was heading back home, when he crashed the car into a neighbor's fence. The accident caused severe damage to the vehicle. Luckily, no one was hurt. Police say the child was extremely lucky..

"He told us later he wanted to be just like mom.So somehow he learned how to drive a car," added Speyer. "Thank God no one was injured. Certainly in this situation there's a lot of potential for injury and damage. As luck would have it, he made out alright."

No charges have been filed in the case.
