CVS Employees Face Penalty For Not Providing Personal Health Information

Should you be required to share health information with your employer? CVS Pharmacy thinks so.

The drug store chain is requiring employees to submit personal health information or pay an extra $50 a month for the company's health insurance program.

We spoke to employees at local CVS stores in the area. While company policy prevents them from appearing on camera, they tell us meetings were recently held to announce that all workers have until May 1, 2014 to go to their doctor and record their vitals.

Eyewitness News spoke to a local expert who says healthcare costs are skyrocketing and this policy is a way to help employees become aware of health issues they may have now.

"We refer to them as silent killers because you don't always know you have hypertension, and you don't always know you have diabetes, you may not know what your cholestrol is so you can start managing these years way before any symptoms appear," said Dr. Thomas J. Foels.

Many are up in arms over this new policy, including employees and advocacy groups, saying it's an invasion of privacy and could lead to discrimination based on medical conditions in the future.

We reached out to representatives from CVS Pharmacy who tell us all of the health information will be collected by a third party and that the drug store chain will never see it.

Representatives say the new policy is "A way to help our employees to be as healthy as they can be, which is why we decided to implement this plan."
