Town of Evans, N.Y. (WKBW-TV) Police say speed was a factor in the crash that killed 18 Year old Ricky Heferle Saturday.

Police believe he was headed East along Sturgeon Point Road early Saturday morning, when he attempted to pass another vehicle. That's when Heferle was apparently met head on with a driver in the westbound lane, swerved and lost control of his car. He struck a tree and died upon impact.

Police believe Heferle was following a friend who was in a separate vehicle at the time of the crash and will be questioning him to learn what his role may have been in the accident.

It's unclear if any charges will be filed in the case.

On Sunday, Friends and family gathered at the crash site and left flowers and messages, creating a makeshift memorial.

Grief counseling was made available for students and teachers at Lakeshore High School, where Heferle was a senior.

Police said it's unclear if Heferle was texting or under the influence of any drugs or alcohol.

The investigation remains open.
