Buffalo, NY (WKBW) It's always a battle when the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town, and Friday night did not disappoint. Less than five minutes into the game, Buffalo's Patrick Kaleta threw a huge body check on Toronto's Nikolia Kulemin. A fight ensued between Kaleta and Toronto's Luke Schenn.
Later in the first, Buffalo on the powerplay, Jordan Leopold let a point shot go that found the back of the net, putting the Sabres up 1-0. Toronto would continue to take penalties, and the Sabres would continue to capitalize.
Still in the first, Sabres on a 5 on 3 powerplay advantage, Derek Roy finds Thomas Vanek in the slot for a massive shot that put the Sabres up by two.
Ryan Miller made his return to the ice from a groin injury. And he was on his game. Facing a breakaway by the Leaf's Phil Kessel, Miller stayed with him and poke checked the puck away.
In the third period, shorthanded, the Leafs turned the puck over in the neutral zone, followed by a Paul Gaustad shot and a Patrick Kaleta rebound goal.
The Sabres would allow one goal in the third period, but would hang on for the 3-1 win on home ice.
The Sabres now travel to Montreal for another division game on Saturday night. Faceoff against the Canadiens is scheduled for 7:00.
