Washington (WKBW.com) Ryan Miller made a season high 45 saves, and Drew Stafford scored a pair of goals as the Buffalo Sabres beat the Washington Capitals 5-1 on Tuesday night. The victory moved the Sabres past the Capitals into sole possession of eighth place in the Eastern Conference with 5 games to play.

Cody McCormick opened the scoring for Buffalo with his first goal of the year at 8:45 of the first. Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville also scored for the Sabres. Pominville scored on the play of the night. He stripped the Capitals Alexander Ovechkin before skating in to score his 29th of the season shorthanded for a 4-1 Buffalo lead at 17:32 of the second. Tyler Ennis added a pair of assists in the contest.

The news wasn't all good for the Sabres. Defenseman Christian Ehrhoff left the game in the first period with an "upper body injury". Ehrhoff hit knee-to-knee with the Capitals Troy Brouwer on the play and did not return. Head Coach Lindy Ruff said after the game that Ehrhoff will miss some time. He was scheduled to be reevaluated on Wednesday.

The Sabres have five games remaining on schedule. The team hosts the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday night at the First Niagara Center.
