Raleigh (WKBW.com) Carolina defenseman Jamie McBain scored just :26 into overtime to give the Hurricanes a 3-2 win, and to spoil a grand opportunity for the Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres picked up a point but missed a chance to move into the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

The Sabres gave up two leads in the loss. Steve Montador put Buffalo up 1-0 at the 4:35 mark of the second. Brad Boyes put the Sabres up 2-1 later in the period. Chad LaRose would tie it for Carolina at the 11:58 mark of the second. Jiri Tlusty scored the other goal for the Hurricanes.

The loss kept the Sabres two points out of 8th place in the Eastern Conference now held by the New York Rangers. The Hurricanes jumped into 7th with the win. Buffalo continues a seven game road trip Saturday in Philadelphia.
