Buffalo (WKBW.com) It's tough to win, tough to make a run, when you can't score. The Sabres hurt themselves on Tuesday night by taking 7 penalties in a 4-1 loss to the New Jersey Devils.

Jason Pominville was credited with the lone goal for Buffalo.
Ilya Kovalchuk led the way for New Jersey with a hat trick, including one of two Devils goals on the power play. Peter Sykora recorded the other New Jersey tally. Martin Brodeur made 29 saves for the Devils.

The loss was the second straight for the Sabres who remained 8 points out of the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 26 games to play.

Sabres Head Coach Lindy Ruff was back behind the bench with his team on Tuesday night for the first time since breaking three ribs on Feb. 6th. Ruff was wearing a protective vest and said after the game he felt better then expected.

The Sabres play in Philadelphia on Thursday.
