Buffalo (WKBW) Another inconsistent effort hurt the Buffalo Sabres in a 5-4 shootout loss against the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. Mike Santorelli clinched the victory for Florida. Santorelli beat Sabres goaltender Ryan Miller in the fourth round of the shootout to secure the win.

The Sabres limped out of the gate on Thursday and trailed the Panthers 2-0 in the second period before scoring three straight goals. Nathan Gerbe, Andrej Sekera and Drew Stafford all scored for Buffalo in the frame to give Buffalo a 3-2 lead heading into the third.

The final period proved to be a back-and-forth affair. Shawn Matthias scored his second of the game at 5:23 to tie the game at 3. Marcus Foligno then tipped home his 5th goal of the season on the power play to put Buffalo back in front 4-3 before Jonathan Huberdeau tied the game once again with his 13th of the season at 13:51. The Huberdeau goal also came on the power play for Florida.

Ryan Miler surrendered 4 goals on 40 shots on Thursday. Florida entered the night as the last place team in the NHL. The Sabres return home to host back to back games. Washington and Boston pay a visit to the First Niagara Center on Saturday and Sunday.
