Sabres Beat Leafs, Snap Skid

January 14, 2012 Updated Jan 15, 2012 at 2:12 AM EDT

Buffalo (WKBW.com) Jason Pominville scored the eventual game winning goal in the second period as the Buffalo Sabres snapped a three game losing skid with a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The victory came in the Sabres final home game of January with the team heading on the road for a seven game swing.

The Sabres received great production out of the "grinders" in the first period. Matt Ellis scored his third goal of the season to opening the scoring at 1:05 of the first period. Paul Gaustad, who assisted on the Ellis tally, got one of his own to make it 2-0 Buffalo at 3:53 of the first. The goal was Gaustad's 4th of the year. Patrick Kaleta had an assist on the first two goals.

The Leafs didn't make it easy on the Sabres though. Mikhail Grabovski cut the Buffalo lead to one at the 14:06 mark of the first, before Joey Crabb tied the game at two at 16:52 with his seventh goal of the season.

Ryan Miller made 24 saves in the victory.

There was one bit of bad news for the Sabres. Defenseman Brayden McNabb suffered a head injury in the first period before leaving the game in the third. He did not return. Head Coach Lindy Ruff says McNabb will likely not be able to play on Saturday in Long Island.

The Sabres begin a stretch of seven straight on the road against the Islanders on Saturday.
