Buffalo (WKBW.com) Thomas Vanek had two goals, but he wasn't the first star on Thursday night. That honor belonged to Cody McCormick who had a goal and two assists, both to Paul Gaustad, as the Sabres knocked off the San Jose Sharks 6-3 at the HSBC Arena.

The victory earned the Sabres their seventh point in the last eight games.

The Sabres jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second period when Jason Pominville scored an unassisted shorthanded tally, but the Sharks made a game of it. Logan Couture and Marc-Edouard Vlasic scored for San Jose to pull the Sharks within a goal after two.

Cody McCormick put the Sabres back out by a pair just :31 seconds into the third period at 4-2.

Ryan Miller made 26 saves in the win. The Sabres host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
