Toronto (WKBW.com) Toronto forward Mikhail Grabovski scored the eventual game winning goal in the second period as Buffalo Sabres fell to the Leafs 4-3 on Tuesday night.

The Buffalo loss, combined with the Carolina Hurricanes shootout win over Washington, cut the Sabres lead for 8th place in the Eastern Conference down to three points.

The Sabres never led on Tuesday. Dion Phaneuf opened the scoring for Toronto in the first period. Phaneuf beat Ryan Miller with a long shot from just inside the blue line to put the Leafs up 1-0. Darryl Boyce gave Toronto a 2-0 lead later in the first period.

The Sabres would get their first goal of the game just over a minute later. Thomas Vanek scored his 27th of the season at the 19:48 mark of the period.

Toronto would retake a two goal lead when Clarke MacArthur beat Miller to make it 3-1 Leafs early in the second.

Buffalo would make it a game with two quick goals later in the period. Jason Pominville scored his 20th of the season off a nice pass from Tim Connolly, before Rob Niedermayer scored just 30 seconds later to tie the game at 3.

The Sabres took 7 penalties in the game. Buffalo hosts the New York Rangers on Wednesday.
