BUFFALO, NY (WKBW) - The 2010-2011 Buffalo Sabres finally have a home win under their belts. They edged the Washington Capitals 3-2 in overtime on Saturday night, thanks to Thomas Vanek's beautiful OT goal.
Sabres goalie Ryan Miller made 23 saves in his return from a lower-body injury. His biggest stop on the night came in the first period when he turned aside Caps captain Alex Ovechkin on a breakaway. It was the usually shot-happy Ovechkin's only shot of the game.
Karl Alzner opened the scoring and gave Washington a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Steve Montador and Vanek (power play) added second period goals. Before Nicklas Backstrom tied the game at two in the third.
Vanek clinched the win when he gained speed in the neutral zone, skated over the Caps' blueline, stickhandled around John Carlson, and beat goalie Braden Holtby.
The Sabres next play on Monday, at home, against Vancouver.
