Toronto (WKBW) The Buffalo Sabres will have the second overall selection in the upcoming NHL draft after the Florida Panthers won the lottery on Tuesday night.

The Sabres, as the last placed team in the NHL, had the best odds of winning the lottery at 25 percent. The Panthers ranked second at 18.9 percent.

It's also possible that the Sabres will have a second pick inside the top five. The New York Islanders held onto the fifth overall selection on Tuesday. The Islanders owe the Sabres a first round pick as part of the trade for forward Thomas Vanek and have the choice of giving up this years pick or a first round pick in 2015. Team officials said as recently as Tuesday that the Islanders hadn't decided.

The first round of the NHL Draft is set for June 27th in Philadelphia
