NHL Free Agency Underway, Lydman and Tallinder test market

Buffalo, NY (WKBW.com) The free agency frenzy is underway in the NHL, the market opened up at noon, and included Sabres defensemen Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman. Both became unrestricted free agents after not signing new contracts with the Sabres.



In an e-mail to Eyewitness Sports Thursday morning, Larry Kelly, the agent for Toni Lydman, said that he had talked to Sabres GM Darcy Regier on Wednesday. Kelly says he was told the Sabres would get back to him if the club could consider making a 3-year offer. As of 11:21 am on Thursday Kelly says he had not heard back from the Sabres.



Don Meehan, the agent for Henrik Tallinder, had no update on negotiations on Wednesday night.



Meanwhile the Ottawa Senators came swinging out of the gates on Thursday. TSN is reporting that the Senators signed veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar to a three year deal worth $5.5 million per year. The deal also reportedly includes a no-trade clause.



Former Sabres goaltender Marty Biron signed the first deal of the day.. with a two-year deal with the New York Rangers announced at 12:01.
TSN reports the contract averages $875,000 per year.
