Grier "excited to be back"

Buffalo (WKBW.Com) Sabres forward Mike Grier says he's happy to be back for another season. The veteran winger addressed the media Wednesday, two days after signing a new one-year contract with the Sabres.

"I'm very excited and happy to be back", said Grier. "I'm glad we could work something out fairly quickly. It was a tough way to end the year, but I'm glad to be back and starting to look forward to next year".

Grier had 22 points in 73 regular season games, but was perhaps the Sabres top forward in the playoffs where he contributed 2 goals and was credited with a team-leading 33 hits. He was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.

"He's an example of how to do things the right way", said Sabres GM Darcy Regier on Wednesday. "He's an example of when to talk, and not to talk. He's an example of the work it takes off the ice as well. That comes with being a veteran and playing in the league for as long as he's played."

Regier says that he has not spoken with the Sabres six other unrestricted free agents, but expects to as the summer goes along.

Regier also added on Wednesday that Sabres Captain Craig Rivet has opted to have surgery on his nagging left shoulder. That procedure will happen in Buffalo over the next couple of days. Regier expects that Rivet may not be able to physically participate during the first week of training camp, but does not believe that Rivet will miss the start of the season.
