Maple Grove wins Class D title

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Chris Secky threw for three touchdowns and
ran for two more as Maple Grove beat Moriah, 55-7, to win the New
York State Public High School Athletic Association Class D football
championship Saturday.
It is the second state title and first since 1998 for Section VI
(Buffalo area) champion Maple Grove.
Secky, a junior, threw for 214 yards on 8-of-9 passing and ran
five times for 28 yards for the Red Dragons. He threw just one pass
in the second half and was perfect in seven extra-point attempts.
Senior Joe Caporale caught three touchdowns during a six-catch,
175-yard performance. Senior running back Jake Larson also had two
first-half touchdowns during a seven-carry, 63-yard day.
Maple Grove (13-0), which entered the game ranked first in the
state after beating defending champion Walton in the semifinals
last week, took a 21-0 lead after one quarter and was up, 42-0, at
halftime.
Maple Grove is located in Bemus Point, a town on the shores of
Chautauqua Lake about 10 miles northwest of Jamestown.
It was the only loss for Moriah (12-1) of Section VII (Northern
New York), located about halfway between Glens Falls and
Plattsburgh. Ron Schofield ran 23 times for 103 yards for the
Vikings.
