Buffalo, N.Y. –(WKBW-Release)
USA Rugby announced today that they have selected the University at Buffalo to host the 2011 Emirates Airline USA Rugby Men’s and Women’s Division I Collegiate Playoffs at the North Campus April 29-May 1st. In addition, the Local Organizing Committee is sponsoring Rookie Rugby Week, a special community service program for local schools beginning April 25th.
The tournament will feature four men’s and four women’s Division I collegiate teams from across the country. Both the men and the women will play on Friday April 29th. Women’s finals are scheduled for Saturday with the Men’s finals on Sunday. Teams and schedules will be released next week. “This is an honor for us to host such a prestigious event and we are thrilled the UB men’s team has qualified already,” says Mickey McGuire, former UB coach and Host Committee Chair.
All of the teams in the tournament are invited to also take part in a community service project known as “Rookie Rugby Week” which will take place in the local schools April 25-28th. The purpose is to introduce students to the game and the benefits of participation. The program is for 4th-7th grades. Participating schools will receive an orientation for physical education instructors by USA Rugby certified coaches and curricula for implementation in PE classes for the day. This will be followed by a visit to the school by participating collegiate team representatives. Tickets to the tournament will be provided to participating groups. Schools may “adopt” the collegiate team by supporting them with posters and wearing team colors during the tournament.
