BUFFALO, NY – (UB Press Release) The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team has announced its upcoming 2013-14 schedule on Monday afternoon, the first of the Bobby Hurley era. Highlighting the non-conference schedule is UB’s first game at the First Niagara Center since 2004 when it hosts Canisius on Dec. 11. The Bulls will open the season on Nov. 8 at Texas A&M.
UB’s game against Texas A&M is its first against a Big 12 opponent since facing former Big 12 member Colorado at the Rainbow Classic in Hawaii back in the 2008-09 season. Following the trip to College Station, the Bulls will return to Western New York, where they will remain on the road as they face Niagara on Nov. 13.
The home opener for the Bulls will be on Saturday, Nov. 16 as they host West Virginia Wesleyan. That game will begin a stretch of four straight games at Alumni Arena. UB will then host Robert Morris (11/26), Delaware State (11/30) and St. Bonaventure (12/7).
UB heads downtown on Dec. 11 to face Canisius at the First Niagara Center in what will be the second game of a doubleheader following Niagara-Davidson. This game will mark the first of two straight seasons that Buffalo and Canisius will play downtown at the arena. This will be the first time that Buffalo and Canisius will meet at the arena since Dec. 12, 1998.
UB will then head to Brooklyn on Dec. 21, as it will face Manhattan at the Barclay’s Center, home of the NBA’s New Jersey Nets. The Bulls return home on Dec. 23 to host Binghamton and then head to the City of Brotherly Love as they face Drexel on Dec. 29. The Bulls will round out non-conference play on Jan. 3 when they host South Dakota State.
“We are excited to release our 2013-14 schedule,” said Hurley. “It is our philosophy to challenge our student-athletes with a demanding non-conference schedule that will prepare our team for league play.”
For the first time since the 2005-06 season, the Mid-American Conference will go back to an 18-game conference schedule, which will begin at home against Northern Illinois on Jan. 8. The Bulls will face all five MAC East opponents twice, both at home and on the road. They will face Northern Illinois and Ball State of the MAC West twice, both at home and on the road. As for the other four teams in the MAC West, UB will host Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan and travel to Toledo and Central Michigan.
UB will wrap up conference play at home when it faces Bowling Green on Saturday, Mar. 8. Due to TV purposes, that game could move to Friday, Mar. 7. First Round MAC Tournament games will take place on Mar. 10 with the remainder of the tournament being played at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH from Mar. 12-15.
