UFFALO, NY (UB Media Release) - Akron¹s Kyle Baumgartner had five straight points in a minute span late in the second half to lead the Zips past UB, 63-57, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Arena. The Bulls led for much of the game, but were unable to hold on in front of a season-high crowd of 2,480.
UB came out dressed in all pink for its annual Pink Zone game, raising over $2,400 for the WBCA/Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Bulls got off to a quick start to the game as a three from Chrissy Cooper (State College, PA/State
College) gave UB an early 7-2 lead. The Zips did take their first lead of the opening half with 2:38 to play, but a layup from Brittany Hedderson (Tecumseh, Ontario/St. Anne) as time expired gave UB a 31-30 lead in the half.
Tied at 46-46 with 8:18 to go in the game, the Bulls staged a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game at 53-46 with 6:48 to go. Five straight Akron points pulled it within two and following a UB basket, Akron cut it to one on a three from Taylor Ruper with 3:35 left in the game. Both teams went the next two minutes with out a basket until a layup from Baumgartner put the Zips up one with 1:23 left. A UB miss gave the ball back to the Zips and despite a good defensive effort for more than 28 seconds, Baumgartner launched a three that went off the back of the rim and then the top of the backboard, before falling in to put Akron up four with just 37 seconds left. The Bulls cut it to two on two free throws from Hedderson, but the Zips hit their final four free throws for the final margin.
The Bulls were led by 17 points and 13 rebounds from Kourtney Brown (Solon, OH/Solon) as she recorded her 14th double-double of the season and the 24th of her career. The 17 points for Brown give her 1,189 for her career and move her into sixth place on UB¹s all-time scoring list. Her 13 rebounds give her 691 for her career and move her into ninth place in school history in that category. Brown also finished with an assist, two blocks and three steals.
Hedderson finished with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and a season-high four steals. Cooper and junior Jessica Fortman (Ashland,
KY/Russell) each had eight points, while Fortman added five assists, three blocks and two steals. Redshirt junior Ashley Zuber (Schnecksville,
PA/Parkview) tied her career-high with five rebounds.
Akron had two players in double figures, led by Baumgartner¹s 19 points and seven rebounds. Kara Murphy finished with 12 points, while Jolene Tamboue had nine points and eight rebounds.
The Bulls are now off until next Saturday when they travel to Oxford, OH to face Miami (OH) at 12:00 pm.
