(CANISIUS COLLEGE) Canisius College senior forward Sylvia Kowalski and senior defender Kathleen DiPasquale were both voted onto the MAAC All-Tournament Team for their performances in the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship, the league office announced today.
Kowalski netted the lone goal against top-seeded Loyola in the semifinals to complete her season with 14 goals and 11 assists for 39 points. The All-MAAC First Team recipient was a four-time conference Offensive Player of the Week, and scored her way onto multiple Canisius all-time leader-boards. Kowalski’s 14 goals are tied for third in program history for goals in a season along with Canisius Sports Hall of Famers Sheila Fassl and Stacy Wagenseil. The Hamilton, Ontario native also owns third place in career points (74) and career goals (29), and banked seven game-winning goals on the year.
DiPasquale led the defense this season and through the tournament, limiting opponents to 71 corners and keeping 142 shots away from the net. She started every game she played this season (17) and also made two shots as a defender. The Williamsville, N.Y. native was also an All-MAAC Second Team selection and All-Academic honoree.
"That’s great,” said head coach Jim Wendling. “Those two had a great season and a great tournament and they deserve the recognition. I only wish they had another year of eligibility left." Kowalski and DiPasquale helped lead the Golden Griffins to a 13-4-3 record, owning the most wins in a season in program history.
