ATHENS, OH – Despite a game-high 25 points from senior Brittany Hedderson, the University at Buffalo women’s basketball team fell at Ohio, 73-64, Wednesday night at the Convocation Center. It was the MAC Opener for both teams.
The Bulls got out to a quick start to the game, scoring the first seven points and led by as many as eight at 20-12, but were unable to pull away early as the Bobcats went on a 19-6 run over the last 11 minutes of the opening half. Both teams struggled to find the scoring column as UB held a 22-21 lead for four and a half minutes. Ohio went on to take a five-point lead into the half.
After pulling within three early in the second half, the Bulls found themselves down again, trailing 53-41, which was their largest deficit of the game. However, UB responded with a 14-1 run, regaining its lead following a jumper from Nytor Longar with 7:49 remaining. A jumper from sophomore Margeaux Gupilan gave the Bulls a two-point lead with 5:50 left, but the Bobcats answered back on a big three from freshman Mariah Byard, who had a career-high 21 points. Ohio would lead for the rest of the game, hitting late free throws to hold on to the victory.
In addition to scoring 25 points, Hedderson added five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Longar added 11 points and five rebounds, while Gupilan had 10 points, four assists and two steals off the bench. Senior Beth Christensen added four points, nine rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals. The rebounding and blocked shot totals were both game highs. Freshman Christa Baccas added four points off the bench, while senior Teresa Semalulu also finished with four. Senior Ephesia Holmes and junior Nicki Hopkins each finished with three points.
The Bulls will remain on the road Saturday afternoon when they head to Miami (OH). Tip off against the RedHawks is set for 4:30 pm.
